SPC Student is 2018 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar

A few weeks before the University of Texas system and Texas Association of Community Colleges co-hosted their All Texas Academic Team medallion and certificate ceremony in Austin March 30, one St. Philip's College student leader who was among those medallion recipients received a congratulatory email from the president of her college regarding a monetary reward and even higher status.

Nominated by St. Philip's College faculty based on achievements both on- and off-campus, St. Philip's College business student Katrina King received an email from St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston that King is one of the nation’s 50 2018 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar recipients. Members of the best-in-USA team represent the best and brightest students who excel in academics, leadership and service.

Each year, approximately 100 outstanding community college students are selected from the 50 community college districts in Texas as members of the All Texas Academic Team. Among that 100 best from that group, King is one of just three earning the Silver Scholar status.

King is the corporate leader of the college’s chapter of the international honor society for two-year colleges---Phi Theta Kappa. She leads a chapter that is one of the highest rated in Texas in terms of productivity and public service, holding the organization’s 5-Star Chapter status. During her St. Philip’s College leadership experience, King marketed education and the St. Philip’s College brand as Ms. St. Philip’s (2016). She was twice a recipient of the Dr. Adena Williams Loston St. Philip’s College Presidential Scholarship (2016-2017 and 2017-2018), and twice the college’s Outstanding Student Organization Leader award recipient (2015-2016 and 2017-2018). Off-campus, King has traveled in recent weeks to Chicago as a member of the college’s Ethics Bowl team, and to Costa Rica to learn more about ecology in her capacity as an international student.

The monetary award element of King’s most recent honor includes a $1,250 scholarship she plans to apply towards tuition to the transfer institution of her choice.

“God willing, I will graduate summa cum laude and I will have my 4.0 when I transfer to a university,” King said. “I am waiting to hear from Trinity University, which is my number one choice. I have been accepted to University of the Incarnate Word and St. Mary's University. Trinity is the number eight business school in the country, according to Forbes. I'd like to own my own allergy-free vegan option bakery as an entrepreneur. I am a business administration student who previously completed a culinary arts program of study. I grew up baking with my grandmother, and now I'm obtaining the business skill,” said King.

King will be further recognized by competition organizers during Phi Theta Kappa’s April 19-21 annual convention in Kansas City, Mo.
