Beatrice Canales Awarded ALA Spectrum Scholarship

Beatrice Canales, the academic unit assistant in the Department of Early Childhood Studies, History, Mexican American Studies, Sociology & Social Work, has received a Spectrum Scholarship from The American Library Association (ALA).

The scholarship is given to students pursuing graduate degrees in library and information studies. This year, the ALA awarded just 61 scholarships to students who exhibited a commitment to diversity, community outreach, academic ability, and leadership potential. Canales was the only recipient to receive a Spectrum Scholarship funded by the Association for Library Service to Children.

Canales is currently working on her masters in Information Library Science (MILS) at the Texas Women's University and expects to graduate in the fall of 2018. She began her master's degree after a 19-year break from school by using a Trim Tab Award Scholarship which took care of $3,000 of her academic costs.

Canales' passion for library work began years ago in 2005. She worked for the San Antonio Public Library for 10 years before working at SAC. She said library studies has always been a passion that she wanted to return to professionally. Her goal is to work in the San Antonio College Library and build a community program that focuses on early literacy for the college's surrounding neighbors.
