Veterans Day Message…

Honoring our Veterans - A Message from NVC President Dr. Baser

Veterans Day Message 2017

Message from NVC President

Dear Northwest Vista College Students, Employees, and Community:

For more than a decade, Veterans Day has taken on a new meaning in my home. As the parents of an army veteran, my wife and I understand the sacrifice both veterans and their families make for the safety and security of the common good. Our first-born-son, Deric, was deployed at the age of 19 and served 15 months in Iraq and 12 months in Afghanistan as part of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division Triple Deuce. His service to our country can only be fully understood by those who have been there themselves. Deric was fortunate to return home but many of his friends and colleagues did not.

Veterans Day, observed on November 11, is a tribute like no other. Each community honors veterans in their own special way. From wreaths, moments of silence, storytelling to symposiums, concerts and parades, each one of these observances exists to pay tribute to those whose sacrifice can never fully be understood or repaid.

Americans have been honoring Veterans Day for 99 years, first designated as Armistice Day and then, since 1954, as Veterans Day. This year, the Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding the observance of Veterans Day to the entire month of November and to include military families. I encourage all veterans to share their stories and others to take the time to seek out these connections and learn from them.

The opportunities to connect with veterans abound at NVC. We are proud and honored that Northwest Vista College has more than 1,600 students and their dependents who are using VA and Hazlewood benefits. There are many more veterans and active military who attend NVC but use other means to pay for their education. NVC veteran students and their dependents are further supported by NVC faculty and staff who themselves are veterans. We are grateful for these students and employees who are dedicated to our country and committed to educational success.

To show our appreciation to our military and veteran students and employees, several events are scheduled at NVC throughout next week. For a complete list, click here. We hope to see many of you there. We also know that some of our veterans may prefer to be by themselves or with their loved ones. We respect that and hope they find comfort in whatever way they reflect on their service and sacrifice.

Each and every day, NVC strives to provide excellent support to our military and veteran students through our Veteran Affairs office and Veteran Support program. Our goal is continuous improvement. If you have ideas on how we can advance in the quality of our services, please let me know.

To all of our military and veteran students and their families, thank you for your service and for being a part of NVC.

- Dr. Ric Baser, NVC President
