Academic Standing   referring to the minimum grade point average that a student maintains at the end of each semester.  Grade point averages determine whether students may continue to take courses, fall into a probationary status or are ultimately dismissed from the institution and are unable to register for future courses; successful completion of a course with a grade of A, B or C.  May determine whether a student may continue enrolling in courses in subsequent semesters.
ACES an Alamo Colleges acronym for Alamo Colleges Education Services.  It is a secure portal connecting Faculty, Staff & Students to Academic Resources, Email, and other Online Resources, including grades.
Admissions  the process that is used by colleges and universities to admit students into their system.  An application is traditionally used to apply to various colleges and universities.  If accepted, a student is able to attend and enroll in courses at that institution.
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses  high school courses that are developed by the College Board, a non profit organization.  Like dual credit courses, the AP courses provide students with the opportunity to receive both high school and college credit.  However, in order for students to receive college credit from a college or university through an AP course, they must take an AP exam at the end of each course and receive a designated score.  Qualifying scores vary with each higher education institution.  Failure to receive the qualifying score will forfeit the college credit, but maintain the high school grade / credit.
Advanced Placement (AP) Exam  the exam that a student will take after successfully completing the AP course.  This exam will determine the outcome of a student receiving college credit for the given course.  Qualifying scores vary with each high education institution.
Alamo Academies STEM-based instructional model operated by the Alamo Area Academies Inc., a non-profit organization, in partnership with the Alamo Colleges, San Antonio area high schools, industry and the cities of San Antonio, New Braunfels and Seguin providing America’s youth with tuition-free career pathways into critical demand technical STEM occupations.  These academies provide students with hands-on experiences as well as internships with a participating organization.  Students get an opportunity to practice what they learned in their coursework and be compensated for during the internship.
AlamoENROLL  AlamoENROLL is a component of MyMAP that encapsulates the recruitment, application, assessment, advising, and registration processes. AlamoENROLL ensures state and federal compliance and is designed to intentionally engage students in their preparation for college transition and success. 
AlamoINSTITUTES  AlamoINSTITUTES is an Alamo Colleges model that includes advising guides to a 4-year degree (core and 18 hours), workforce programs (certificate/AAS degrees, I-BEST, Basic-skills support), continuing education programs, certifications, extracurricular activities, and advising integration.
Articulation Agreement a legal document between two or more academic institutions that aligns courses within a degree plan leading to a formalized pathway for the transfer of credits to be recognized by the two institutions.  This agreement minimizes duplication of coursework, thereby allowing students to maximize their time and resources.
Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS)  A two-year applied associate degree program designed to lead the recipient to immediate employment and/or career advancement. The program is composed of an orderly, identifiable sequence of courses designed to meet specific occupational competencies and outcomes. It includes technical courses, general education courses, related instruction, and, as appropriate, elective courses to prepare students for employment as technicians or professionals. 
Associate of Arts Degree (AA)  An award that normally requires at least 2 but less than 4 years of full-time equivalent college work in a grouping of courses designed to lead the individual directly to employment in a specific career or to transfer to an upper-level baccalaureate program.

Banner  The Alamo Colleges system of record that hosts student information, such as grades, academic standing, balances, courses, etc. [need clarification] 
Banner ID An unique identification number assigned to students, also known as a student ID, by Alamo Colleges' Banner system.  This student ID is required to conduct transactions throughout the Alamo College System, most importantly, to enroll and drop students from courses.

CANVAS  Alamo Colleges’ Learning Management System that provides students with course content, resources and in some instances, the delivery mechanism of an online course.
Census  The official day of record that public higher education institutions must determine the enrollments that qualify to be reported to the Coordinating Board for state reimbursement.  Census dates vary depending on the different parts of an academic term.
Cohort  An identified group of Alamo Colleges students whose academic performance is tracked over time. 
College Placement  Referring to the process that college advisors use to determine the courses that students are eligible to be enrolled.  College Placement exams provide advisors with scores that are used to guide college advisors in this process.
College Readiness A student’s level of preparedness that includes knowledge, skills and mindset to enroll and succeed in college level courses, without taking developmental coursework.
Concourse Syllabus An Alamo Colleges system that contains course syllabi for courses offered at each of the Alamo Colleges.  https://alamo.campusconcourse.com/ 
Concurrent Enrollment Refers to a student who is enrolled at two or more postsecondary institutions at the same time. It is also used to identify high school students who are enrolled in high school and taking a college class or classes for college credit-only (not dual credit). 
Core Curriculum The common part of every undergraduate curriculum that introduces students to a broad range of knowledge areas beyond their major and helps students develop basic intellectual competencies in reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and computer literacy. In Texas, the core curriculum usually consists of 42-48 semester credit hours of course work distributed among the disciplines of communication, mathematics, the natural sciences, the arts and humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences. State law mandates the transfer of core curriculum courses between all public institutions of higher education. 
Course Agreement A document that is agreed upon by both the respective college delivering the course and the corresponding school district.  This document provides detailed information on the course content, Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the method and location of course delivery, textbook to be used during a three year period, and other pertinent details associated with the dual credit course to be taught.
Credit Hour  The number of academic units for a course.  It is the second digit of the four digit course number.  It determines the amount charged for tuition.  It is applied toward the total number of hours needed for completing the requirements of a degree, diploma, certificate or other formal award.

Dean   A faculty member that serves in an administrative capacity and oversees assigned departments. For instance, traditionally the Dean of Arts and Science oversees the English and Math Departments.
Degree Program  Any grouping of subject matter courses which, when satisfactorily completed by a student, shall entitle the student to a degree from an institution of higher education. A degree program is characterized by a disciplinary major which is the primary focus of course work. 
Department Chair  Department Chairpersons are faculty whose primary responsibility is to serve as an administrative department head and ensure the attainment of educational and operational objectives of the college. Department Chairs serve in an essential leadership capacity in the chain-of-command between faculty and administration. 
Developmental Course / Developmental Education  A course or courses, tutorials, laboratories, or other efforts to bring students’ skill levels in reading, writing, and mathematics to entering college level. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and study skills or thinking skills courses are considered developmental education courses in the ACGM manual and fall under developmental education funding limits established by the Texas Legislature. 
Distance Education  The formal educational process that occurs when students and instructors are not in the same physical setting for the majority (more than 50 percent) of instruction. 
Distance Education Course (also Online Course)  A course in which a majority (more than 50 percent) of the instruction occurs when the student(s) and instructor(s) are not in the same physical setting.
Drop Deadline or Drop Date The colleges' official date for which all students enrolled in courses must be officially dropped or be subject to failing a course, receiving an incomplete grade, but may not receive a "W" or withdraw on their academic transcript.
Drops  (Dropping Students) The act of officially removing a student from a course roster.  When students are removed / dropped prior to the semester's part of term census date, the student is not impacted negatively.  However, when a student is removed / dropped after the semester's part of term census date, the drop will be displayed on a student's transcript and could potentially negatively impact a student's by way of the 6-drop rule, financial aid, and other possibilities.  Please check with your Dual Credit Liaison or College Representative to provide you with additional guidance prior to the respective census date.
Dual Credit (DC) A process by which a high school student enrolls in a college course and receives simultaneous academic credit for the course from both the college and the high school.

Early Admissions  High school students may be admitted for credit work at the College District according to the following guidelines: 1. The student must be recommended by the high school principal/designee or counselor. This recommendation shall be the primary consideration for admission. 2. The course load shall be determined by the high school counselor and the college counselor. 3. The student must have completed the sophomore year equivalent of the required units for graduation. 4. The student must have acceptable placement scores as determined by the colleges of the College District.
Early College High School  The institution or entity that provides the outreach, curricula, and student learning and support programs for students who attain the Recommended or Advanced High School Program diploma and up to two years of college credit simultaneously.

FERPA  FERPA, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, is a federal law that governs the release of and access to educational records. Financial Aid (FAFSA)  The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step to apply for federal aid such as grants, loans, and work-study. Freshman  A college student who has completed fewer than 30 semester credit hours in a 120 semester credit hour program.

International Baccualrate (IB)  An internationally recognized curriculum that offers 11th and 12th grade high school students the opportunity to earn an IB diploma. IB diploma holders may obtain advanced standing at some colleges and universities. In the IB Program, students gain a broad world view; take an in-depth approach to academics; and develop time management, problem-solving, research, and organizational skills that will help them well beyond college.  Students enrolling at the Alamo Colleges could receive college credit for courses successfully completed in an IB Program while in high school.  Please check the Admissions section of an Alamo Colleges catalog.
Internship  A supervised, external learning experience for students in non-health professions programs. Internship experiences provide workplace settings in which students learn and apply program theory and management of the work flow. Internship experiences take place in any setting outside of health care and students may or may not be paid for the learning experiences.

Junior A college student who has completed the equivalent of one year of undergraduate work; that is, at least 60 semester hours but less than 90 semester hours in a 120-hour program.

Level I Certificate Award  A certificate program consisting of at least 15 but no more than 42 semester credit hours (23-63 quarter hours) designed to be completed in one year or less. Level I certificate programs are exempt from the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative, although all certificate programs must provide for local assessment and remediation of students. 
Level II Certificate Award A certificate consisting of at least 43 but no more than 59 semester credit hours (64-89 quarter hours).

Marketable Skills Award  A credit program of 9-14 semester credit hours or a workforce continuing education program of 144-359 contact hours. They meet minimum standard for program length specified in the federal Workforce Investment Act, but are too short to qualify as certificate programs on the Coordinating Board program inventory. 
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) A formal agreement between two institutions to establish official partnerships.  In the High School Programs area, MOUs are used for dual credit and Early College High School programs.  The Alamo Colleges enter into an agreement with our service area school districts to describe each entity's roles and responsibilities to deliver dual credit courses to high schools and Early College High Schools.
MyMAP (My Monitoring Academic Progress) MyMAP is the student’s systematic experience to completion from the point of initial contact with Alamo Colleges through completion of program requirements. MyMAP is a comprehensive system designed to improve student success at Alamo Colleges. It is a personalized tool including a series of online self-paced learning modules to help new students transition to college. Each module contains helpful information for students via videos, audio, text, and supplemental links. One of the modules is the “Alamo Colleges Introduction to College and Pathways.” MyMAP will also help monitor students’ progress until they earn a certificate or degree.

Parts of Term  Courses of varying length; eg Flex I, Flex 2..  These are the same courses but delivered in compressed timeframes.  
Partners  Key organizations or individuals who work in formalized concert with us to achieve a common goal or performance.  Examples of key partners include the P-16 consortium, Alamo Workforce Solutions, etc. 
Prerequisite   A course or competency required prior to entering a program or a course. 
Program Eligibility  The act of meeting all crieteria and requirements to eligible to enroll in courses toward that respective program
Program or Program of Study  Any grouping of courses which are represented as entitling a student to a degree or certificate.

Remediation  An activity designed to teach basic competencies in such areas as reading, writing, oral communication, and mathematics. See Developmental Education. 
Repeated Hours for Attempted Course   Hours for a course that is the same or substantially similar to a course that the student previously attempted for two or more times at the same institution. Previously attempted courses from which the student withdraws before the official census date shall not count as an attempted course. 
Residence / Residency  A code that represents the county, state, or country of which the student is a legal resident as identified by the student as his/her permanent address at the time of application to the institution.

Semester Credit Hour (SCH)   A unit of measure representing an hour (50 minutes) of instruction over a 15-week period in a semester or trimester system or a 10-week period in a quarter system. 
 Senior a college student who has completed the equivalent of three years of undergraduate work; this is, at least 90 semester hours, but less than 120 semester hours in a 120-hour program.

Sophomore  A college student who has completed the equivalent of one year of undergraduate work; that is, at least 30 semester hours but less than 60 semester hours in a 120-hour program. 
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Learning outcomes that describe essential learning that students will be able to demonstrate at the end of a course.  
Syllabi or Syllabus  A professor’s instructional map given to students on the first day of class that describes the course and its student learning outcomes, provides the assigned textbook and other instructional materials required for the course, as well as important dates for assignments, exams and activities throughout the course.

Technical Course  Workforce education courses for which semester credit hours are awarded. 
Texas Success Initiative (TSI)  A legislatively mandated program effective September 1, 2003. The TSI, which replaced the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP), gives more flexibility to public higher education institutions in their efforts to ensure that students have the academic skills they need to succeed in higher education. The TSI requires testing of students' academic skills upon entry into public higher education and appropriate counseling, advice, and opportunities -- such as developmental education courses or non-course-based education (computer-based instruction or tutoring, for example) -- for improving those skills. Each college or university is responsible for determining when students have the appropriate skills to succeed in college. 
Transcript  the official document that denotes all courses at a college, with official grades, withdrawls, and incompletes.  Once a degree is completed, the conferred degree is stamped on the document.
Transfer Credits  College level courses taken at institutions of higher education listed on an official transcript that the Admissions and Registrars could review and accept in a student's account.
TSI Assessment  The official assessment created and maintained by College Board whose scores provide the colleges a reading for purposes of placing students in specific courses.
TSI Exemptions  Scores from non-TSI assessments, such as ACT or High School End of Course Exams that could exempt students from having to take the TSI and place into specific courses.

Withdrawal  The act of unenrolling completely from a college course.
Workforce Education  In reference to programs offered primarily by community and technical colleges, technical courses and programs for which semester hours are awarded and vocational courses and programs for which continuing education units are awarded. Workforce education courses and programs prepare students for immediate employment or job upgrade within specific occupational categories.
