SPC Campus Queen Competes for National Prize

St. Philip’s College (SPC) pre-nursing student, Arabela Alvarado was recently invited to take part in the prestigious EBONY magazine HBCU Campus Queens contest. She is the only community college student entered into the national competition that culminates with ten winners featured in the magazine’s September issue. Alvarado, who was crowned during Homecoming Week, promotes education and San Antonio. This unique opportunity gives her a national online platform to promote postsecondary education and St. Philip’s College. Unlimited online voting is available through Jan. 20.. 


 

SPC Welcomes Sakai for Commencement

Approximately 640 students graduated this fall 2017 semester, earning degrees and certificates, including several high school students. The 225th District Court Judge honorable Peter Sakai was the guest speaker. In his capacity as judge, Sakai has dealt with San Antonio's toughest child abuse and neglect cases. Graduating from fields such as social science, nursing, criminal justice, sonography, physical therapy, medical lab technology and early childhood education, students as future professionals will be poised to join Sakai on the front lines of protecting children. Students in these various fields are expected to gain much inspiration from Sakai’s address at SPC’s 138th Commencement.


 
 

SPC Faculty Send 9,000 Books for Cameroon

St. Philip’s College (SPC) faculty member, Dr. Solomon Nfor, recently awarded, La Vernia High School Student Council for taking an enthusiastic role in an area-wide drive to collect 9,000 books for English-speaking universities in Cameroon. The book shipment has, in the past, included lab equipment. The donation is a group effort and past contributors include the University of Incarnate Word and Pearson Book Company. Financial support for shipping the materials comes from SPC students and faculty donors. Nfor, a Cameroonian, heads the yearlong project.
