Northwest Vista College among top community colleges nominated for Aspen Prize

Northwest Vista College has been chosen for the list of 150 community colleges in the U.S. qualified to enter for the 2019 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the country's signature recognition of top achievement and performance in America’s community colleges.  Northwest Vista College was selected from a group of nearly 1,000 community colleges nationwide to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize. In Texas, Northwest Vista College was one of 15 community colleges selected from about 125 institutions. Northwest Vista College will move onward to the next round of competition by submitting an application to be evaluated through an arduous assessment for a spot on the top ten Aspen Prize finalists list in 2018.

“The Aspen Prize is a major recognition in higher education and validates the significant progress faculty and staff have made in improving student success," said Northwest Vista College President Dr. Ric Baser. “To be among the top 150 community colleges in the nation eligible for this award speaks to our employees’ commitment to excellence in creating opportunities for success for NVC students and their families.”

Given every two years since 2011, the Aspen Prize recognizes institutions with exceptional successes in four areas: learning; certificate and degree completion; employment and earnings; and high levels of access and success for minority and low-income students. Besides the reputation and merit of being listed among the most accomplished community colleges across the country, the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence awards multiple monetary prizes for top applying institutions.

In addition to Northwest Vista College, three other institutions in the Alamo Colleges District - St. Philip's College, Palo Alto College and San Antonio College, have also been included in the national list of 150 community colleges.

“We are elated to garner this national recognition of the excellence that is reflected in the achievements and renown of our colleges," said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie. "I congratulate the college presidents, faculty, administrators and staff whose commitment and dedication has earned this honor," he added.

Top ten finalists will be named in May 2018. The Aspen Institute will then conduct site visits to each of the finalists and collect supplementary data. A distinguished Prize Jury will select a grand prize winner, finalist(s) with distinction, and rising star(s) in spring 2019.
