LULAC Rey Feo…

For the past 21 years, the Tom Morton Sandoval LULAC Rey Feo Parent/Child Scholarships have given 533 parents and their pre-school children the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a college education. This year marks a milestone for this unique program, as 250 Parent/Child Scholars, including 25 second generation scholars who were awarded the promise of a two-year scholarship when they were small children, have completed the program by earning a certificate or associate degree or completing the first two years of a university transfer program.

LULAC Rey Feo Parent/Child Scholarships Awarded

For the past 21 years, the Tom Morton Sandoval LULAC Rey Feo Parent/Child Scholarships have given 533 parents and their pre-school children the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a college education. This year marks a milestone for this unique program, as 250 Parent/Child Scholars, including 25 second generation scholars who were awarded the promise of a two-year scholarship when they were small children, have completed the program by earning a certificate or associate degree or completing the first two years of a university transfer program. Almost 30% also have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree. A total of 84% of program completers are Hispanic or African-American. The program is a partnership effort between the Alamo Colleges District, LULAC Council #2 and the San Antonio College (SAC) Women’s Center (now Services for Women and Non-Traditional Students (SWANS).

This year, 25 parents, who are currently enrolled at one of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges District, were awarded a scholarship. To provide them with an added incentive for academic success, once they achieve their educational goal (associate degree, certification or the first part of a transfer program) their child will be entitled to a two-year scholarship to one of the District’s colleges. One parent also received the $1,000 Lisa Rose Flores Memorial Parent/Child scholarship and another the Raul and Sarita Hinojosa Memorial Scholarship. The Tom Morton Sandoval LULAC Rey Feo Parent/Child scholarship program is the only one of its kind in the nation. Parents also receive one-on-one counseling, progress monitoring and support from SWANS, headed by Director Dr. Helen Vera.

The featured speaker at the event, Crystal Laubach, a 2015 recipient of the Parent/Child Scholarship and a SAC Distinguished Graduate, who earned an associate degree in teaching, shared her perspective on how the scholarship program made  her success possible. Also, as part of the event, scholarship certificates were presented to the parents and their children by Sofia Marie Rodriguez, Reina de lal Feria de las Flores; Tom Sandoval, president emeritus, and Raul Hinojosa, executive director, LULAC Council #2, Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation; Northwest Vista College President Dr. Ric Baser; Northeast Lakeview College President Dr. Veronica Garcia; Palo Alto College President Dr. Mike Flores; Dr. Lisa Alcorta, San Antonio College vice president of student success; and Jim Eskin, executive director, Alamo Colleges Foundation. The $25,000 donated for the Parent/Child scholarships will be matched by funds from the Alamo Colleges Foundation to add to an endowment which provides the scholarships.
